Independence County Judge Robert Griffin said Thursday morning the county is proud to end its first 200 years of existence and to begin the next 200 years by raising the first county flag on New Year’s Eve to greet 2021.
Griffin and other county officials were on hand Thursday to officially raise the flag for the first time. The judge said the new flag was needed on a separate pole to be able to lower it on certain occasions when the American and Arkansas flags might not be approved to be lowered by protocol. So, he reached out to the Private Job S. Neill Camp 286 Sons of Confederate Veterans of Batesville who had a flag pole on the county courthouse grounds to inquire about flying the flag on the group’s pole.
“They immediately filled the need and even voted to dedicate it to the use of the county to fly the new flag,” the judge said Thursday. “Not only did they honor us with that, I asked if they might sell it to the county so we could own the flagpole, and in a call Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, they offered to do just that.”
