A high number of domestic violence calls have been answered by the Independence County Sheriff’s Department over the past few days, according to Sheriff Shawn Stephens.

Stephens said eight domestic violence incidents were investigated over the weekend and through Tuesday, Oct. 26. He said charges have been filed in two of those cases, four cases are still under investigation, and those involved in the other two reported incidents did not want charges to be filed against the other party.

The sheriff also said a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado diesel truck that had been reported stolen from a Floral residence on Oct. 27 was later found burned in White County.

Stephens said the truck, with 35-inch tires and aluminum wheels, was stolen sometime between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The truck, valued at $35,000, was a total loss.

And the department is also on the lookout for a Shetland pony that was reported stolen last week from a farm at Newark.

According to the incident report, the owner said someone cut a fence next to a gate to their property sometime after 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, and took the black pony.

The report said the pony was valued at $1,000 — making its theft a felony.
