Old Independence Regional Museum is celebrating a “Historic Halloween” with its annual Fall Family Day to be held Saturday, Oct. 30, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on the museum grounds.  During the Family Day event, admission to the museum, along with the activities, is free and open to the public.

The museum will offer a variety of Halloween-themed crafts and activities to give children of all ages an engaging hands-on learning experience, according to a media release.  Participants will have the opportunity to fashion a clothespin ghost and make a bat that can eat, sleep, and fly.  Many Halloween traditions focus on the importance of firelight, so visitors can learn how to light a flame and make their own candles.  Volunteers will be on hand to assist children with decorating paper masks which can be used later for trick-or-treating. Face painting will also be available.

Later in the day, Kenton Adler, master storyteller, will tell some tales to enchant the crowd. Visitors are invited to have a taste of kettle corn and enjoy a free hot dog from First Community Bank as they explore the museum exhibits and activities. Following the Family Day event, the museum will pass out candy for trick-or-treaters from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. or while supplies last.

“We want families to have a safe and fun Halloween while learning about some old holiday traditions” stated Terri Crawford, the museum’s humanities educator. The gift shop, stocked with items from local artists, authors, and crafters, will also be open to the public.
