Patrons of the Southside School District are voting today on a proposal to build for the future.
The district, the fastest growing in north central Arkansas, has an opportunity to use an enormous amount of funding from the Arkansas State Department of Education for a project that makes improvements from kindergarten to high school.
The project is one the school district and the state have worked on together for over three years. Superintendent Dion Stevens says it’s a big day in Southside.
“This wouldn’t even be a thought if we wouldn’t have received almost $23 million from the state that will pay well over half of what we need,” said Southside Superintendent Dion Stevens in an interview with White River Now’s Gary Bridgman. “I feel like we can generate another $10 million from the restructuring of bonds and that will leave around $5 million that we are asking our patrons for an increase.”
“That’s not 5 million coming to the district every year. That’s just money available to service debt on 5 million over the life of a bond,” he said.

The voting is taking place at Southside City Hall and will go until 7:30 this evening at which time the votes will be counted, and the patrons of the district will render their decision.
