It was a back and forth contest all night, but the Lady Southerners pulled out a 58-56 win in the conference opener Tuesday night against Highland.
The opening quarter was back and forth as the teams combined for 5 3-pointers, 2 from Southside’s Brett Gardner and 3 from Highlands Emma Hyslip, and ended all tied up at 17. Highland stayed hot in the second quarter and led 31-28 at the break.
Olivia Allen’s 7 points in the 3rd quarter helped the Southerners pull ahead by one 43-42 heading into the final quarter. The Lady Southerners managed to hit their free throws down the stretch (9-12) and a last-second shot fell short from Emma Hyslip and the Southerners got the close win. Gardner and Allen led the Southerners with 18 points each and Kamie Jenkins notched another double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
