A candidate for the state’s first district congressional seat is recovering from injuries he suffered in a small plane crash in Sharp County on Friday afternoon.

In a video posted on social media, Jody Shackelford said he was flying his plane from Mountain Home back to Sharp County when his engine appeared to quit during a landing approach at the Sharp County Regional Airport.

Jonesboro television station KAIT reported the plane crashed at the south end of the airport near Highway 62. The candidate was airlifted from the scene to UAMS.

Shackelford’s campaign manager said on social media the candidate suffered back injuries and a broken nose.

Shackelford is running against Republican incumbent Rep. Rick Crawford and State Rep. Brandt Smith in the May 24 Republican primary.
