Lyon College Scots vs. William Woods Owls

FULTON, Missouri – The Lyon College Scots baseball team split an American Midwest Conference doubleheader with the William Woods Owls in Fulton, Mo., on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots, 30-19 overall and 13-5 in the AMC, won the first game of the twin-bill 6-4, but the Owls came back to win the second game 2-1.

In the top of the first inning for the Scots in the first game, Alan West singled to center field to bring in Aaron Hurd for a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Joe Weatherford reached first on an error by the William Woods third baseman and he advanced to third base, while Troy Strack scored on the play. West singled to left field to bring in Weatherford for a 3-0 Lyon College lead.

William Woods came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth 3-3, but in the Scots half of the seventh, West doubled to right field to score Strack and Weatherford. Alec White laid down a bunt single to bring in West to make it a 6-3 Lyon College lead.

Clayton Burke picked up the win for the Scots.

In game two, neither team scored until the fifth inning when Weatherford hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Kaden Doan to give Lyon College a 1-0 lead.

William Woods took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when a run scored on a double-play and then a run-scoring single made the score 2-1.

West suffered the loss on the mound for Lyon College, but had 15 strikeouts in the process.

On Friday afternoon, the Scots baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to the Owls at a high school baseball field in Columbia, Mo., on Friday afternoon to start the American Midwest Conference series.

The Scots (29-18) are 12-4 in the AMC and a half-game behind Columbia College, who leads the league at 12-3.

The day started off promising with Joe Weatherford hitting a solo homer over the centerfield fence in the first inning. Later in the inning, Alec White doubled in Trey West for a 2-0 Lyon College lead.

William Woods tied the game in the bottom of the second with a 2-run homer and scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 5-3.

A solo homer in the sixth and a 2-run homer in the seventh inning made it an 8-2 William Woods lead.

White doubled in West again in the top of the ninth inning. Ayden Heitmann suffered the loss for the Scots from the mound, giving up seven hits and five runs. Nicholas Chaney pitched for 2.2 innings and Jesse McGonigal finished out the game for Lyon College on the mound.

The Scots will be in action this weekend at Fred Wann Field for the final home-stand of the regular season when Hannibal-LaGrange comes to Batesville beginning on Friday afternoon with a single game and a doubleheader slated for Saturday.
