An Augusta man was killed late Monday afternoon in an exchange of gunfire outside an apartment.

According to a release from the Arkansas State Police, witnesses told state police investigators there was an argument between Jaquale Mitchell, 27, and Anfernee Neal, 25, both of Augusta, outside an apartment that was then followed by both men shooting. Mitchell died a short time later at a White County hospital.

The release said the state police, Augusta police, and other law enforcement agencies have been searching along for Neal, who has since been criminally charged with first-degree murder.

State police say the investigation is continuing by the agency’s Criminal Investigation Division.

The release said anyone encountering Neal, or who may know of his whereabouts, should contact their nearest police or sheriff’s department.
