Southerner stands out on, and off, the mat

Just qualifying for a state tournament is a daunting task for any athlete. And that exponentially grows in difficulty when you reach the event and begin competition.

Few people can call themselves a state champion. Southside Charter High senior Alex Cooper has that title not just once, not twice — but three times as he has topped the State 4A 220 LB weight class in back-to-back-to-back years, most recently on Feb. 19 at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock.

Beyond his titles, which carry an already high level of achievement, Cooper also excels on the football field as well, capturing the Lineman of the Year award at Southside. He was named to the All-State team in 4A and was also invited to play in the Arkansas/Texas All Star Football Showdown.

What really sets Cooper apart is that his excellence also carries over into the non-athletic side of high school. He recently graduated with honors as well as received a ”Good Citizen” award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. He’s been named a Character and Leadership All-American; was an Arkansas Boys State delegate; is a three time all-region choir selection; was named Mr. Southerner for his senior year of high school; and most recently worked with several of his classmates to develop a group on campus that highlights awareness of mental health called Bring Change To Mind.

Alex Cooper (AC) is a wonderful young man,” said Southside Head Wrestling Coach Jonathan Edwards. “AC has worked hard for each and every accomplishment he has. He was a leader by example. He brings more to life than just sports. He is an excellent student and person. The work he has done with teen mental awareness due to COVID was amazing work and eye opening.”

Cooper plans to attend the University of Central Arkansas in the fall.
