LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas lawmakers have begun a special session that’s focused on tax cuts and a school safety grant program.
The House and Senate on Tuesday convened for the session that Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson called after the state’s surplus reached $1.6 billion.
The tax cut plan includes accelerating reductions in corporate and individual income taxes that lawmakers approved last year.
Lawmakers will also take up a plan to set aside $50 million for school safety grants.
Democrats have been calling for the Legislature to take up teacher raises, but they face resistance from GOP legislative leaders.
