The Melbourne Bearkatz found themselves at home to open the 2022 season as they faced the Bald Knob Bulldogs for the first time in school history.
The air was ripe with anticipation as the Katz began the Stu Smith era, and fans in attendance saw a back-and-forth for the first half.
Both teams had good and bad moments on both sides of the ball, but the Bearkatz held strong and regained the lead just before the half, taking a 19-14 advantage into the break.
The Katz struggled out of the gate in the second half, going three and out, but the defense found another gear, holding Bald Knob scoreless as the offense got back on track, scoring three times on the ground to take a 34-14 victory.
Trey Wren led the way offensively for Melbourne, throwing two touchdown passes, a 14-yard strike to Carter Bray to open the scoring, and a 67-yard bomb to Nathan Woodall to give the Katz the lead for good.
With the win, Melbourne improves to 1-0 on the season and will hit the road next week to take on Lonoke.
