A small earthquake rattled an area just south of the Arkansas-Missouri border near Manila, Ark. around 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The USGS said the quake had a depth of 7.2 kilometers and had a 2.6 magnitude.
The border region of northeast Arkansas, southeast Missouri, and west Tennessee — part of the New Madrid seismic zone — has recently experienced a number of small quakes.
A magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck an area near Imboden, Ark. on Aug. 21. And in June, geologists reported a swarm of at least six quakes in the northeastern section of Arkansas.
In the winter of 1811 and 1812, the New Madrid seismic zone generated a months-long sequence of earthquakes that included three very large earthquakes estimated to be between magnitude 7 and 8.
