The Melbourne Bearkatz continued to build program firsts on Friday night as they traveled to Lonoke for a matchup with the Jackrabbits.

The teams were very evenly matched by all indications, and the scoreboard was no different, as each team traded blows through the first and second quarters of play. The only difference in the half was a missed extra point by Lonoke, which lead to the Katz taking a 14-13 lead into halftime.

The second half was a more explosive version of the first, as the teams continued to put points on the board.

The Bearkatz scored with about three minutes remaining, but they missed a two-point conversion that would have made their lead three points, giving Lonoke an opportunity to win on what would have been their final drive.

The Jackrabbits stalled and punted with 1:45 remaining in what remains a puzzling decision. The Bearkatz got a first down on the ground, but proceeded to go three-and-out and had to punt the ball back to Lonoke with less than a minute to play. One explosive play later, the Jackrabbits were within striking distance, but could not manage the clock well, and time elapsed to let the Katz sneak away with a huge 34-33 win.

Trey Wren threw for four touchdown passes and ran for another, as his younger brother, sophomore Grant, was on the receiving end of two of those passes.

The Bearkatz return home Friday night for a matchup with rival Cave City.
