Friday night at Mountain View High School, the Mountain View Yellowjackets locked up the #1 seed throughout the upcoming 8-man 3A/4A Division Playoffs with a hard-fought 30-27 victory over the Fountain Lake Cobras.

After the Yellowjackets’ defense forced a Cobra turnover on their opening possession, Mountain View scored three plays later when junior quarterback Drew Shelton scored on a 59-yard run. Mountain View led 6-0 after the two-point conversion failed. On their next possession, Mountain View increased their lead to 14-0 scoring on a two-yard run by Shelton. The two-point conversion was good on a pass from Chad Russell to Kenner Gray giving Mountain View a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Midway thru the second quarter, Fountain Lake got into the scoring column with a ten-play ,43-yard drive, scoring on a nine-yard touchdown run by Abe Rose. The extra point was good by Mats Koller as Fountain Lake cut Mountain View’s lead to 14-7. The Cobras quickly tied the game three minutes later on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Destyn Fields to Juan Diggs, and Koller’s extra point tied the game at 14-14.

The Yellowjackets answered with a ten-play, 61-yard drive, scoring on a six-yard touchdown pass from senior Trampas Stubbs to senior Kenner Gray. The two-point conversion was good on a run by Jace Tinkle giving Mountain View a 22-14 lead with 27 seconds left in the first half.

Fountain Lake wasted no time closing the gap before the end of the half as they scored on the last play — a 37-yard pass from Fields to Evan East, who was stopped at the two-yard line. However, before the whistle, he lateraled to his offensive lineman Kyle Pinkston who scored. The two-point conversion failed, and Mountain View led 22-20 at halftime.

The two-point conversion was good on a carry by Stubbs giving Mountain View a 30-20 lead with 3:43 to go in the game. Fountain Lake would add a touchdown to close the gap but Mountain View got the ball back with 1:55 to go and was able to run out the clock for the 30-27 victory.

The Yellowjackets offense was led by Stubbs who had 24 carries for 174 yards, he also had one passing touchdown. Shelton added 115 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns, while Gray added a receiving touchdown.
