An Arkansas man facing charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol has requested more time for his defense to prepare for his Jan. 9, 2023, trial.

Richard “Bigo” Barnett, 61, of Gravette, Ark., was indicted on an eighth charge for participating in the riot on Dec. 21. Last week, his attorneys filed a motion asking for an extension, saying they needed more time for procedural matters and also referred to the recent indictment as an “eleventh-hour surprise.”

In a response filed yesterday, government attorneys said Barnett’s “failure to comply with the Court’s deadlines is unwarranted,” but did say it wouldn’t oppose a smaller extension — Dec. 29.

Barnett (pictured below), who was photographed with his feet on Nancy Pelosi’s desk during the riots, faces eight charges: obstruction of an official proceeding; aiding and abetting; entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon; entering and remaining in certain rooms in the Capitol Building; disorderly conduct in a Capitol Building; parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol Building; and theft of government property. Barnett has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
