Many schools are issuing early closing notices this morning as wintry precipitation is due to sweep across Arkansas again.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of northern, west-central, and southern Arkansas, while an Ice Storm Warning is in effect for portions of northeastern and central Arkansas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). (Click here for a link to the National Weather Service.)
NWS forecasters say two systems are expected to bring moisture into the state as temperatures slowly drop at, or below, freezing. The first system is expected by Monday afternoon, bringing freezing rain and sleet to portions of northern and central Arkansas.
The second system, which forecasters predict will be the main producer of freezing rain, is expected to move in Tuesday afternoon, affecting a larger portion of the state.
Areas of sleet and light freezing rain will develop across the Ozark Mountains today, and also in the Ouachita Mountains toward the Oklahoma border. Some light snow could occur in the far northwest.
Heading into tonight, precipitation will mostly end across the Ozarks, with rain becoming freezing rain and some sleet in central sections of the state.
Based on forecasting from Monday morning, total ice accumulation is expected to be less than a quarter inch in most locations — but up to a half inch is expected across portions of central, east-central, and northeastern Arkansas.
This event is expected to wrap up late Wednesday morning as temperatures rise back above freezing, but rain will continue through Thursday night.
