The winter weather is still causing havoc on roadways, and more precipitation is on the way.

Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery said Wednesday morning that trash will not run today due to the road conditions. He said when roads improve, “it will be an all hands on deck approach to picking up trash.”

Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens also stressed the roads are still very slick today and residents should stay off them if possible. With the exception of the main highways in Batesville, the streets are still hazardous, with various vehicles resting in ditches on side roads.

The winter weather advisory for the area has been extended until 12 p.m. on Thursday as an additional round of wintry precipitation is expected to begin this afternoon and last through tomorrow morning.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Little Rock is forecasting freezing rain and/or sleet in many areas, however, as the freezing temperature line moves northward tomorrow, many areas could begin to change over to a cold rain. Hazardous road conditions are expected to continue for much of the day, with additional ice accumulations occurring this afternoon into the overnight hours.

An ice storm warning is in effect for portions of central and southern Arkansas as those areas are forecast to receive a good portion of accumulation.

The NWS says above-freezing temperatures tomorrow afternoon will cause some melting, but caution should be used Thursday night, as black ice might be possible.
