While, at the time of this post, the presidential race is still up in the air, below is a closer look at statewide races as well as results from Independence County.

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY

14,521 of the registered 21,869 voters (a 66.4 percent turnout) cast their ballots in Independence County.

President Donald Trump carried the county with 78 percent of the vote with Joe Biden receiving 19 percent with all of the remaining candidates — 11 in all — splitting the remaining three percent.

The only contested race in Independence County was for the Justice of the Peace seat in the northeastern part of the county.

Longtime incumbent Bill Lindsey, a Democrat, was knocked off the court with Republican newcomer Jimmy Limbaugh receiving 71 percent of the vote to Lindsey’s 29 percent. That makes the Independence County Quorum Court all red.

All the school millages in the county failed.

  • Batesville — 64 percent against the 38.75 millage race.
  • Cave City — 65 percent against (from the Independence County section)
  • Hillcrest — 81 percent against (from the Independence County section)

The statewide Issue 1 passed with 52 percent of the vote. Issue 2 passed with 54 percent, and Issue 3 failed with 58 percent against.

ELECTION 2020-HOUSE-ARKANSAS

GOP Rep. French Hill wins reelection to Arkansas seat

Republican Rep. French Hill has won reelection to his Arkansas House seat, overcoming a challenge from a Democratic state senator who had hoped to become the state’s first Black member of Congress.

Hill defeated Democratic state Sen. Joyce Elliott in the race for the seven-county district that includes Little Rock. Hill has held the seat since 2015.

Elliott ran for the same seat a decade ago, but lost by 20 percentage points. She had run a much tighter race against Hill this year, outraising him in the two quarters leading up to the election. Hill had criticized her as too liberal for the district.

Cotton coasts to win, Trump nabs Arkansas in GOP dominance

Republican Sen. Tom Cotton has won reelection and President Donald Trump secured Arkansas’ six electoral votes.

Republicans aimed to maintain their dominance of the state in Tuesday’s election. Cotton defeated Libertarian nominee Ricky Dale Harrington, a former prison chaplain who had never run for office before.

The only Democrat running against Cotton dropped out hours after the filing deadline last year. That freed up Cotton to run ads in battleground states and to campaign with more endangered Senate colleagues.

STATEWIDE ISSUES

The election also featured three ballot measures, including a highway tax proposal.

The latter issue focused on the continuation of a 0.5 percent sales tax for state and county roads. It passed statewide 644,658. Voters voting against numbered 521,344.

Issue 2 also passed. This was a constitutional amendment to amend term limits to 12 consecutive years for state legislators with the opportunity to return after a four-year break. The issue passed with 632,886 voting for the issue and 510,564 voting against.

Issue 3 was an amendment to amend the process for the submission, challenge, and approval of proposed initiated acts, constitutional amendments, and referenda. It failed with 623,770 voting against and 491,915 for the issue.
